Centers
Audubon
New York is connecting people
with nature across New York State. At Audubon Centers,
from Buffalo to New York City to the tip of Long Island, the people
of New York
State are experiencing nature first hand and developing the "passion
essential to sustain the
conservation movement." (John Flicker, President,
Audubon)
The
ideals of Audubon's 2020 Vision are taking root in New York as our
Centers program continues to grow, with its ambitious goal to create
an Audubon Center in every major region of the state.
The
ten essential elements of an Audubon Center include:
-
Promote Audubon's mission to protect birds, other wildlife and
their habitats.
- Provide
quality education programs that give people the knowledge, skills
and motivation to protect the environment.
- Provide
site-based, science-based education for children, teens, families
and adults.
- Educate
communities on the public policy process and encourage citizen
participation in conservation.
- Create
agreements with Audubon state offices, if the Center is not
owned and operated by an Audubon state office.
- Have
individualized strategies for long-term sustainability; including
earned income, fundraising and endowment.
- Serve
diverse ethnic and socio-economic groups.
- Are
community-based, reflect community needs and revolve around
a protected place in the community.
- Incorporate
"green building" principles in Audubon Center buildings.
- Use
accepted qualitative and quantitative methods to regularly evaluate
their success.
