Tern Shelter Construction

February 10, 2018 - Oyster Bay, NY

Email nycoast@audubon.org or call (516) 922-3200 to register.

Please join us at 134 Cove Road, Oyster Bay, NY for our fifth annual tern shelter building event (rain or shine). We are going to build “teepees” to provide shelter for Common Tern (NYS Threatened) and Roseate Tern (federally and NYS Endangered) chicks. These shelters will give chicks a safe place to avoid exposure to too much sun and wind. Staff will later deliver these shelters to Great Gull Island, which has the largest nesting concentration of Roseate Terns in the Western Hemisphere and the largest nesting concentration of Common Terns in the world. Please email nycoast [at] audubon.org for more information and to sign up for this event. Also, please bring your own power drill, as we'll need to use screws to build the wooden shelters.
