DEANSBORO

New York State Century Farm Award recipient Bishopp Family Farm invites you to see, listen and learn about the benefits of grassland birds on their 100 acre organic grazing operation by grabbing a pair of binoculars and participating in a twilight pasture walk from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 24 at 2809 Rt. 12-B in Deansboro.

According to Troy Bishopp, grasslands are one of the most important and imperiled habitats across the state. Habitat loss and degradation have resulted in sharp declines in grassland bird populations in New York since 1966. The Bishopp Farm has been active in managing fields with grazing cattle to enhance the populations of wildlife but finding balance between production, environmental and financial goals is always a concern.

That is why the Bishopps have partnered with a dynamic, practical teacher to lead the pasture walkabout and discussion on bird habitat, ecology and implementing best management practices for grassland birds. Andy Hinickle is Audubon New York's Conservation Biologist, located at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca. Hinickle leads grassland bird conservation efforts, with an emphasis on working with private and public landowners within important bird focus areas. He works closely with partner agencies and organizations to engage landowners in cost-share or other incentive programs, writing conservation and management plans for project sites, and monitoring the bird response to management activities.

As always, an ice-cream treat from Waterville’s Roc Star Ice Cream will reward participants in this family event. To register for this event, as space is limited, call 315-841-3336.
