Shawangunk
Grassland IBA
The
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently released their Compatibility
of Determination for model airplane flying and associated events
at the Shawangunk Grasslands Wildlife Refuge.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that model
airplane flying is INCOMPATIBLE with the Refuge mission.
Although
this was a great success for the grassland birds and wildlife found
there, the issues is not over!
Model
airplane enthusiasts are now pressuring the Director of the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service, Steven Williams, to reconsider the Compatibility
of Determination and open the Refuge to model airplane flying.
For reasons
outlined our letter
to the Refuge (Click Here to View Letter),
Audubon New York supports the Refuge's decision that model airplane
flying and competitive events are incompatible with the primary
goal of the Refuge, which is to protect and enhance the wildlife
and habitat found there.
Model
airplane flying will negatively impact not only the unique wildlife
that resides at the Refuge but also the visitor experience. The
outcome of this decision will set a precedent for allowing this
type of recreation at other wildlife refuges, threatening wildlife
throughout the state.
Although
many of you have taken the time to express your support of the draft
Compatibility of Determination to the Refuge Manager, Steve Kahl,
we now need to contact Steve Williams,
Director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and ask him
to uphold the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's finding that model
airplane flying and associated activities are incompatible with
the mission of the Shawangunk Grasslands Wildlife Refuge. Make
your voice heard and help protect New York's unique natural areas!
