Donald G. Colvin Conservation Honoree Joanne M. Mahoney, Onondaga County Executive
Since her election as Onondaga County Executive in 2007, Joanne M. Mahoney has quickly distinguished herself as a champion for sustainable development and environmental protection. Her leadership in creating the innovative ‘Save the Rain Program’ to prioritize green infrastructure solutions to manage the County’s stormwater has created a national model for improving water quality which has earned her numerous accolades, including from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Environmental Conservation. Her commitment to working with all partners to advance and achieve the clean-up of Onondaga Lake and the restoration of its critical habitats is crucial to sustaining this Audubon Important Bird Area and the community’s high quality of life. In addition, her development of the County’s first sustainability plan exemplifies her commitment to environmental stewardship, making her a truly deserving recipient of the Donald G. Colvin Conservation Award.
