Dear friend,
This summer has been a true testament to the power of Audubon New York’s network of chapters, partners, activists, and volunteers. With the help of our dedicated members, we continue to achieve conservation results in New York to benefit birds and people.
At the beginning of the month, Audubon New York sent a petition to all of its advocates asking them to support the Washington County Grasslands legislation. Over 1,400 people joined us in urging Governor Cuomo to support the protection of critical grassland habitat by paying the property taxes on the State’s Wildlife Management Areas in Washington County. Due to these efforts, the Governor signed S.1672 (Little) / A.6759 (Woerner) into law on August 17th, which requires the State to pay property taxes on all state-owned land in the towns of Argyle, Fort Edward, and Kingsbury. We are thrilled that the Governor has taken this important step to support current and future land acquisitions, as it will help ensure that vital habitat for threatened and endangered bird species is protected. Over the course of the summer, with the help of 21 volunteers, Audubon staff and partners were also able to increase protection of shorebird species by engaging beach-goers on Long Island. Thanks to all of these “Good Eggs,” an increased number of Piping Plover chicks was recorded by the Town of Hempstead. If you have not yet pledged to Be a Good Egg, please click here to do so now!
