WHAT: Valentine’s Day Citizen Science Fair

WHEN: Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Willows at Brandow Point, located on state Route 385, Athens

DETAILS: Greene Land Trust and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia and Greene Counties invite you to learn about citizen science and become nature’s valentine. Citizen science projects involve volunteers working with researchers to assist them in the collection of environmental data. Citizen science projects offer a chance for volunteers to collaborate with professionals in efforts that increase understanding of the natural environment. Volunteers get a hands-on opportunity to learn about the environment and research while helping scientists gather much needed information. The fair will feature displays and demonstrations of range of citizen science opportunities — including an opportunity to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count and learn how to contribute to mapping invasive species in New York with I-Map on the web. Representatives from Greene Land Trust, Audubon New York, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program and Cornell Cooperative Extension will present a variety of ways that nature lovers can enjoy the outdoors while contributing to scientific discovery. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet author Akiko Busch, who will be available to sign and discuss her latest book, “The Incidental Steward: Reflections on Citizen Science.” The program will take place in the Willows farmhouse. This program is provided free of charge, but advance registration is suggested.
